The Star with a Sword

& A Love Longer than Time

by Linda Crate

The Star with a Sword

He was arrogant enough
to pluck a star
from the sky,

and think the moon
wouldn’t punish him;

some knights bowed
or showed
pity to the king,
his empathy was only
for the star;

as he held the hand of
heaven’s daughter, his heart
sank into his stomach—

he knew that he loved her
when he first glimpsed
her shimmering hair and vibrant eyes,

but earth was no place for
someone as glittering
and bright as she;

“I feel what you feel, too,
let me ask my mother”

and the moon allowed
him to become a star to join her
daughter in the sky,
and he wielded a sword when
other kings thought to steal stars
from the sky.

A Love Longer than Time

they envied her,
and hated her all at once;
but she was in awe
of her—

she knew the other woman was
otherworldly,
and so she set on a quest
to know this cosmic
being better;

and the young woman
revealed she was
born of an asteroid—

she could tell the asteroid’s
daughter was afraid that
she wouldn’t want to be her
friend any longer,

but she reassured her that
she still cared for her;
and confided she might even
have a crush on the asteroid’s daughter—

and with a devious grin and a wink
the asteroid’s daughter gave
her a kiss,
gasping chasms of light wrapping
their tendrils around both
in a warm embrace;

and their love continues to shine
through the universes they touch thousands
of years later.
